What You Will Learn:

Join Mushroom Growers and Foragers Chris and Laura Gilmour of Chris Outdoors and Wild Muskoka Botanicals for this fun and educational free class.

Chances are you already notice mushrooms. You spot them on a walk, on a fallen log, tucked into the leaf litter, and you wonder what they are. Learning to identify what you find is a skill that deepens our connection to the land and to the fungi that form a keystone of this planet's ecology.

Once you understand the parts of a mushroom, the families they belong to, and the clues a spore print reveals, a walk in the woods will never be the same. You can begin working with these organisms in areas like foraging, medicine making, earth repair and more.

You will learn:

  • The anatomy of a mushroom and the key traits that matter most when identifying one

  • The major groups and families of mushrooms, and how to tell them apart

  • How to take and read a spore print, and why it is a core part of your identification toolkit

  • Fungi ecology and the fascinating role these organisms play in the health of the land and your garden

  • How these foundations set you up to forage edible and medicinal mushrooms confidently, safely and sustainably

REPLAY - There is no publicly available replay for this class, please do your best to attend live. The replay will be available for enrolled students of "The Mushroom Course" through Chris Outdoors.

Meet Your Mushroom Guides...

Chris & Laura Gilmour

Chris and Laura live on a twenty-six-acre permaculture homestead on the western edge of Algonquin Park, where they grow and forage food for themselves and for their wild foods business, Wild Muskoka Botanicals.

Chris was introduced to mushroom cultivation and wild foraging over twenty years ago while apprenticing in permaculture and sustainable forest management on Seven Ravens Farm. Laura is a forager, herbalist and naturalist who formally studied ecology and has spent more than eighteen years teaching foraging and plant walks for wilderness schools, colleges and community groups.

Together they have been growing and foraging mushrooms on their homestead for the past sixteen years, working with many different species and techniques.

"Growing and foraging mushrooms has been a complete game changer on our homestead. It is one of the quickest and easiest ways to grow a year's worth of food in a small space. We hope you can join us for this class!"
